In many parts of the world, butterflies are seasonal creatures. At MMoFA, visitors can go butterfly hunting all year long! You may spy a fluttering jewel in the lush outdoor Whistler Butterfly Garden. And you can view shimmering indoor works of art created by 19th century iconic art genius James Abbott McNeil Whistler that are signed with his famous hidden butterfly monogram.
With the 2004 gift of an original Whistler graphic with butterfly monogram, MMoFA inaugurated its outdoor Whistler Butterfly Garden. American artist James Abbot McNeil Whistler changed the history of art. In keeping with his now famous controversial aesthetic creed of "art for art's sake," the dandy artist assigned musical titles to many of his paintings such as "Symphony in White," exhibitions such as "Arrangement in White and Yellow," and his masterful lithographs called "Songs in Stone." To commemorate Whistler and his many contributions to art history, MMoFA's Butterfly Garden bears the musical title "Harmony in Gold and White." The word 'harmony' describes a pleasant combination of musical tones and a pleasant ambiance. The white blooms of the nectar producing plants featured in MMoFA's art garden attract the near sighted butterfly and provide a lovely effect at night.
