The Madison Museum of Fine Art (MMoFA) announces the 2014 gift of a painting titled “Maria” by British artist Robert Priseman. The artist is best known for thematic series of works aimed to engage the viewer in dialog on provocative psychological and sociopolitical issues. Such works include the Hospital series, Subterraneans, The Francis Bacon Interiors, and No Human Way to Kill.
“Maria” is an oil on linen portrait of Maria Iacovou, a close friend of the artist and an academic at The University of Cambridge. It was painted at a time when she was pregnant with her second child.
Priseman’s work is held in museums around the world including Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Museum der Universität Basel, The Royal Collection Windsor, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and Mead Art Museum.
A charitable 501c(3) tax-exempt institution, MMoFA promotes the value of visual art education, teaches the great traditions of visual art, demonstrates how visual art masters enrich contemporary life, and enhances the quality of life for residents and travelers in Georgia.
